Dear ragazzi,
Writing to you from the farm, it took a few crazy trains, buses and a very long plane ride to get here, but we made it.
As many of you know, last month I quit my bartending job in DC to spend the year (and more) in Italy and continue my research on sustainable food systems. Long story short, I have a master’s in Food Studies: Policies for Sustainable Production and Consumption, and wrote my thesis on natural wine as a sustainable method of wine production. I’ve written my story so many times, in so many variations, even I am sick of hearing it. For those that are new here, my recent post is a good place to start.
Since day one, my newsletter has been completely free. It has been a space for creativity, realizations and a place to share some of the lessons I’ve learned during my research to eventually write a book or two. My research is funded by myself with tips from the bar. What makes research expensive? Well, travels to wineries, breweries, bus rides, and train rides to get to and from and accomodations in between. The thing about natural wine, craft beer and sustainable food, there is no money in them, but still I believe in all the things they stand for, therefore I will keep writing, advocating and sharing their stories.
Here a few examples of places I’ve visited all in the name of research
I share this because I want to continue sharing my journey through sustainable food, wine, beer and Italy with all of you, but in reality, I need support. I reduced my annual plan price from $50 to $30, which equates to $2.50 a month. Even if 20 subscribers supported la tana by subscribing for the year, that would change everything.
If you are new here, feel free to read through the archive and see if past or present stories resonate with you. As a perpetual student and bartender I understand the financial constraint of signing up for yet another subscription, but you never know the answer unless you ask the question.
In any case, I thank you all for your continued readership, community and moral support. That is equally important.
I have upcoming trips planned to Abruzzo, and Veneto. With a lot of cold calling and organizing multiple train schedules I managed to find a few winemakers and brewers that were gracious enough to invite me into the cantina and into their home. I am also dropping my first Dispatch from the Farm this Friday. So if you are not able to support finacially, but interested in what reading about my adventures in wine. Your free subscription is welcomed, too.
As always, thank you reading
Tana from la tana
